About the Department

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication was established in 2015 with the aim of providing quality media education and professional training. It is committed to shaping creative, ethical, and industry-ready communication professionals capable of contributing effectively to the evolving media landscape. In an era driven by digital innovation and global connectivity, the department fosters critical thinking, social responsibility, and professional excellence.

The department offers a dynamic learning environment where theory meets practice, enabling students to develop a comprehensive understanding of media and communication. Through a balanced approach to learning, students are introduced to key areas such as:

  • Journalism & News Media: Reporting and writing for print, broadcast, and digital platforms, with emphasis on editing and media ethics.
  • Creative Production: Hands-on training in photography, radio and television production, podcasting, and digital storytelling.
  • Strategic Communication: Crafting and managing messages for advertising, public relations, and corporate communication.
  • Media Theory & Digital Culture: Exploring digital media, media literacy, and film studies, with a focus on community and development communication.

With a strong interdisciplinary approach, the curriculum blends academic rigor with hands-on training. Students explore the social, cultural, political, and economic dimensions of media while developing practical skills in storytelling, strategic communication, visual narratives, and content creation. 

Academic and Professional Engagement

The department actively bridges classroom learning with real-world practice through seminars, workshops, guest lectures, media festivals, internships, and industry interactions. Students participate in creative projects, reporting assignments, audio-visual productions, and community-oriented initiatives that enhance confidence, leadership, and collaborative skills. This engagement ensures exposure to contemporary media practices and professional standards.

Facilities

The department is equipped with essential infrastructure to support practical learning and media production. It features the Satyajith Ray Audio-Visual Theatre, a dedicated space for film screenings, presentations, and academic engagements. Students have access to DSLR cameras and a range of production equipment that enable hands-on training in photography, video production, and digital content creation.

To further enhance learning experiences, a fully equipped studio with modern facilities is currently under construction, which will provide advanced space for audio-visual production, broadcasting, and creative media projects.

Mass gazatte 4.O Media fest 2026

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, MES Kalladi College, Mannarkkad, successfully organized MaSS Gazette 4.0 Media Fest on February 16 and 17. The two-day fest aimed to provide students with practical exposure and insights into the evolving media landscape. The fest commenced on February 16 with two engaging workshop sessions. The first session, titled “From Idea to Screen: Script Writing Workshop,” was handled by Joseph Kiran George, a scriptwriter in the Indian film industry. The session provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of transforming ideas into structured screenplays, highlighting key elements of storytelling and script development. The second session, “Step into Interactive Realities: AR and VR Workshop,” was conducted by Illuzia Lab, led by its CEO and founder Noufal P. The workshop introduced students to the emerging fields of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR), offering hands-on insights into immersive technologies and their applications in modern media. The second day, February 17, marked the official launch of the media fest. Actor and director Anand Sathyan, known for his works Vazha and Gauthamante Radham, attended as the chief guest. He interacted with the audience, sharing his experiences in the film industry and offering valuable advice to aspiring media professionals. Following the inaugural session, a panel discussion was held on the topic “Madhyama Meghalayile Maatavum Velluvilikalum” (Changes and Challenges in the Media Field). The panel featured Shahala Vellincode, Chief Sub Editor and writer at Manorama, and Jijo George, Senior Reporter at Deshabhimani. The discussion focused on the current transformations in media, ethical challenges, and the future of journalism. As part of the fest, the department also organized a film screening of Feminchi Fathima for the students of the college, adding a creative and reflective dimension to the event. Overall, MaSS Gazette 4.0 was a vibrant and informative media fest that successfully combined academic learning with industry exposure, enriching the students’ understanding of contemporary media practices.

From idea to screen: Script Writing Workshop

As part of the Mass Gazette Media Fest, the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at M.E.S Kalladi College organized a workshop titled “From Idea to Screen: Script Writing Workshop” on 16th February 2026 at the Satyajit Ray Audio Visual Theater.The resource person for the session was Joseph Kiran George, who brought valuable industry experience and creative insights into the art of script writing. The workshop focused on the fundamentals of storytelling, including idea development, plot construction, character building, and screenplay structure.Joseph Kiran George explained the process of transforming a basic idea into a compelling script suitable for visual media. He also shared practical tips on dialogue writing, scene construction, and maintaining narrative flow. Real-life examples from the film industry made the session highly engaging and relatable for students.The interactive nature of the workshop encouraged students to actively participate and explore their creative potential.

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at M.E.S Kalladi College, in association with the Kerala Union of Journalists, organized a media seminar titled “Challenges of Indian Media in the Current Scenario.” The programme aimed to provide students with a deeper understanding of the evolving media landscape and its contemporary challenges.The seminar was inaugurated by Basheer Madala, who highlighted the changing dynamics of Indian media and the need for responsible journalism in a fast-paced digital era. His inaugural address set the tone for a thought-provoking session.The resource person, Jagadeesh Babu from Kerala Kaumudi, delivered an insightful talk on the challenges faced by Indian media today, including issues of credibility, media ethics, political influence, and the impact of digital platforms. He emphasized the importance of fact-checking, ethical reporting, and maintaining journalistic integrity.The seminar witnessed active participation from students and faculty, making it highly interactive and engaging. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Nashariya K, Head of the Department, who expressed gratitude to the speakers and participants.

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at M.E.S Kalladi College organized a skill development programme titled “AI for Digital Readiness & Advancement” on 9th December 2025 at the Satyajit Ray Audio Visual Theatre. The programme aimed to equip students with practical knowledge of artificial intelligence and its growing relevance in media and communication.The session was inaugurated by the Principal, Dr. Rajeesh C, who emphasized the importance of adopting AI technologies in academics and professional practices. The Head of the Department, Ms. Nashariya K, welcomed the gathering and introduced the resource person.The resource person, Habeeb Rahman Y P, delivered an engaging session focusing on the role of AI in modern media. He explained how AI is transforming journalism through automated news writing, data journalism, audience analytics, and content personalization. He also highlighted ethical concerns such as misinformation, deepfakes, and responsible AI usage.A key highlight of the session was the practical introduction to AI tools for media production. The speaker demonstrated tools for creating videos and images using artificial intelligence, including platforms like Runway ML, Canva, and DALL·E. Students were introduced to prompt-based content creation, enabling them to generate visuals, edit videos, and enhance storytelling efficiently.

The programme was formally inaugurated by Dr. C. Rajesh, Principal of MES Kalladi College, who appreciated the department for organizing the event and motivated students to pursue their creative interests with dedication and discipline.The interactive session with VM Sadique Ali gave students valuable insights into wildlife photography, career opportunities in photography, and the passion required to excel in the field.
