The Research and Postgraduate Department of Chemistry, established in 1967, has a long-standing tradition of academic excellence, growth, and service. Initially introduced to handle the Pre-Degree course, the department progressively expanded its academic offerings with the B.Sc. Chemistry (Subsidiary) programme in 1971, B.Sc. Chemistry (Main) in 1976, and the M.Sc. Chemistry programme in 1981, thereby evolving into a full-fledged postgraduate department. Over the years, it has been recognized for its academic quality, with NAAC peer teams identifying it as one of the best-performing departments of the institution.
The department achieved significant milestones with DST–FIST funding in 2014, enhancing its research infrastructure, and its recognition as a Research Centre under the University of Calicut in 2017, enabling doctoral research. Currently, it has recognized research supervisors contributing to advanced research and mentoring scholars.
Academically, the department focuses on undergraduate, postgraduate, and research programmes, emphasizing strong theoretical knowledge, experimental skills, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. The curriculum incorporates modern and emerging areas such as Green Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Nanochemistry, and interdisciplinary research, ensuring relevance to current scientific developments.
Supported by a dedicated team of faculty and staff, the department actively engages in research, publications, and funded projects. It provides well-equipped laboratories, advanced instrumentation facilities, and a conducive environment for innovation and learning.
Beyond academics, the department contributes to society through extension activities such as water quality analysis, dry rubber content testing, and awareness programmes. With a commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service, the department aims to produce competent, critically thinking graduates prepared for the challenges of a dynamic, technology-driven world.

MESKCON International Conference- Chemistry
The MESKCON International Conference was jointly organized by MES Kalladi College, Mannarkkad (Autonomous), and the Research and Postgraduate Department of Chemistry on 30th and 31st January 2026. The conference aimed to provide a vibrant platform for students, research scholars, and faculty members to engage with recent advances and emerging trends in chemical sciences and interdisciplinary research. The programme was organized under the able guidance of Dr. T. N. Mohammed Musthafa, Head of the Department of Chemistry, and Dr. Ajay Ajith, Guest Faculty, whose leadership and coordination played a pivotal role in the successful conduct of the event. Their efforts ensured smooth planning, academic rigor, and effective participation throughout the conference. The conference featured two distinguished invited lectures by eminent scientists from renowned institutions. Dr. V. Ganesh, Senior Principal Scientist at CSIR–Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CECRI), Karaikudi, delivered an insightful lecture highlighting recent developments and applications in electrochemical research. His presentation offered valuable perspectives on cutting-edge research and industrial relevance. The second invited lecture was delivered by Dr. Rijeesh K, Senior Lecturer from the University of Luxembourg, who shared his expertise on advanced research methodologies and global research collaborations, inspiring participants to pursue international academic exposure. The conference witnessed enthusiastic participation, with over 60 delegates attending the event. The participants included undergraduate and postgraduate students, research scholars, and faculty members from the Department of Chemistry as well as from other institutions. The interactive sessions encouraged scholarly discussions, exchange of ideas, and networking among participants from diverse academic backgrounds. Overall, the MESKCON International Conference was a significant academic event that enriched the scientific knowledge of the participants and fostered a culture of research, innovation, and collaboration within the academic community. DAY-1 (Venue: 3- Ambedkar Hall)-Talk 1 The first invited lecture of the program was delivered by Dr. V. Ganesh, who is currently serving as a Senior Principal Scientist at CSIR–Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CECRI). The lecture witnessed active participation from faculty members, research scholars, and undergraduate and postgraduate students from our college as well as from neighboring institutions, reflecting the wide academic interest in the theme of the session. Dr. V. Ganesh delivered an insightful lecture on the topic “Emerging Global Issues in Energy and Healthcare Sectors: Sustainable Solutions through Electrochemistry.” In his presentation, he emphasized the growing global challenges related to energy demand, environmental sustainability, and healthcare diagnostics. He highlighted the crucial role of electrochemistry in addressing these challenges through innovative and sustainable technological solutions. Special emphasis was given to recent developments in electrochemical sensors, their design, working principles, and applications in energy storage systems, medical diagnostics, and environmental monitoring. The lecture began at 11:45 a.m. and was chaired by Dr. Mohammed Musthafa T. N., Head of the Department, who formally introduced the speaker and coordinated the session. Dr. Ganesh’s talk was well-structured and informative, blending fundamental concepts with recent research advancements and real-world applications. Following the lecture, an interactive session was conducted in which research scholars and students actively engaged with Dr. Ganesh, raising questions and discussing current research trends and career opportunities in electrochemistry. Dr. Sreenivasan K.P. Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry delivered vote of thanks to the gathering. The session concluded at 1:00 p.m., after which the gathering was dispersed for the lunch break. Overall, the lecture was highly informative and intellectually stimulating, providing valuable insights to all participants. DAY-1 (Venue: 3- Ambedkar Hall)-Talk 2 The second invited talk organized by the Research and Postgraduate Department of Chemistry was conducted in online mode. The session was handled by Dr. Rijeesh K., Senior Lecturer at the University of Luxembourg. He delivered an insightful lecture on the topic, “Mechanical Stress and Strain Sensors Based on Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Elastomer Sheets, Fibers and Paint.” The session commenced at 3:00 PM IST under the chairmanship of Dr. Mohammed Musthafa T.N., Head of the Research and Postgraduate Department of Chemistry. In his lecture, Dr. Rijeesh elaborated on the fundamentals of cholesteric liquid crystal elastomers and highlighted their unique optical and mechanical properties. He explained how these advanced materials can be engineered into sheets, fibers, and coatings to function as highly sensitive stress and strain sensors. The talk provided valuable insights into recent developments, practical applications, and future research prospects in the field of smart and responsive materials. The online session lasted for about one hour and witnessed active participation from students, research scholars, and faculty members, all of whom greatly benefited from the presentation. Following the lecture, a 15-minute interactive session was conducted, during which participants clarified their doubts and engaged in meaningful discussion with the speaker. The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Sreenivasan K.P., Assistant Professor, who expressed gratitude to the resource person, the chair, and all attendees. Day-2-Oral Presentation The Oral Presentation Session was scheduled on Day 2 of the conference and was conducted at CV Raman Hall. The session was chaired by Dr. Deepa K., Assistant Professor at KAHM Unity Women’s College, Manjeri. The presentations began at 11:00 AM and were carried out in a well-organized and systematic manner. A total of three oral presentations and three poster presentations were featured during the session. Each participant was allotted five minutes to present their research findings, followed by a three-minute viva voce session, during which the chair and audience members posed questions and offered constructive feedback. The time-bound format ensured concise and focused presentations while also encouraging meaningful academic interaction. The session witnessed enthusiastic participation from research scholars and postgraduate students from the department as well as from other departments. The presentations covered diverse and emerging areas of research, reflecting the scientific rigor and dedication of the participants. Among the presenters, Ms. Basira K.T., a research scholar working under the guidance of Dr. Mohamed Musthafa T.N., was adjudged the Best Paper Presenter in recognition of the quality, clarity, and impact of her work. The award was formally presented during the valedictory function of the conference, marking a proud moment for both the scholar and the department.

Institutional Visit CUSAT
A research institution visit was organized to Cochin University of Science and Technology for first-year B.Sc. Chemistry (FYUGP) students on 05.12.2026. A total of 39 students participated in the programme, accompanied by faculty members Dr. Juliya A. P. and Dr. Ajay Ajith, who served as escorts and coordinators for the visit. The group commenced their journey from the college at around 5:30 a.m. and reached the CUSAT campus by approximately 10:00 a.m. Upon arrival, the students were warmly received by members of the Department of Chemistry. For effective interaction and learning, the students were divided into four groups, each guided by research scholars from the department. This arrangement ensured that every student had the opportunity to closely observe and understand the facilities and ongoing research activities. The visit included a comprehensive tour of advanced research laboratories and specialized instrumentation facilities. The research scholars provided detailed demonstrations and explanations of various sophisticated instruments, including UV-Visible Spectrophotometers, Infrared (IR) Spectrometers, Mass Spectrometers, and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) systems. Students were introduced to the principles, working mechanisms, and practical applications of these instruments in modern chemical research. In addition to technical exposure, the interaction with research scholars offered students valuable insights into higher studies, research opportunities, and career pathways in chemistry. The visit significantly enhanced the students’ understanding of real-world scientific practices beyond the classroom. Overall, the programme was highly informative and inspiring. The students expressed great enthusiasm and curiosity throughout the visit, and many reported feeling motivated to pursue research-oriented careers in the future.
