DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE
The Department of Commerce was established in 1967, laying a strong foundation for commerce education in the college. The first batch of Pre-Degree Commerce students appeared for the university examination in 1969. In 1971, the college was upgraded to a degree college, and the B.Com programme was introduced in the same year, inaugurated by P. P. Ummer Koya, the then Minister for Education, Kerala, on 01-12-1971. The institution attained postgraduate status with the introduction of the M.Com programme in 1978. The first batch of M.Com students appeared for the university examination in 1980 and secured 100% results with a first rank. In 2013, B.Com Co-operation and B.Com Computer Application programmes were started in the self-financing stream, enhancing students’ career prospects. The Department was elevated to a Research Department in 2024.
The Department offers a well-structured curriculum aligned with the University of Calicut syllabus, focusing on developing knowledge, skills, values, and professional competence through dynamic and interactive teaching methods. It is supported by ICT-enabled classrooms with smart interactive boards, good infrastructure including spacious classrooms and accessibility features, and a strong academic resource base with 1668 textbooks in the central library and 1406 in the department book bank. The department conducts skill development programmes, workshops, and national and international seminars in areas such as IPR, entrepreneurship, and research methodology. It also promotes industry–institute interaction through industrial visits and study tours, maintains MoUs with reputed organizations, and offers add-on, value-added, and certificate courses. Extension activities and community outreach programmes further enhance experiential learning and holistic student development.
