Courage to Care: A First Aid Awareness Program

In honour of World First Aid Day, Women Cell presents A hands on Session to create awareness on First Aid in students.

Report on the “Courage to Care” Workshop The Women Cell of MES Kalladi College, Mannarkkad, organized a workshop entitled “Courage to Care” on 11.09.2025 at Ambedkar Hall. The objective of the programme was to create awareness among students about the importance of compassion, responsibility, and timely intervention during emergencies, while also equipping them with basic first aid knowledge and life-saving skills. The session commenced with a formal welcome address by Priya Velayudhan, Coordinator Women Cell, followed by the inaugural remarks of The Principal, Dr C. Rajesh, who highlighted the significance of developing practical competencies in addition to academic learning. The workshop was facilitated by Mr. Sureshkumar V, an eminent Fire and Rescue officer , who conducted the session with clarity and practical orientation. The resource person began by emphasizing the theme “Courage to Care”, underlining that courage lies not only in facing adversity but also in extending care to those in need. She then moved on to the technical aspects of first aid, beginning with a detailed demonstration of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). The correct procedure for chest compressions and rescue breaths was demonstrated, and selected students were given the opportunity to practice under supervision. The importance of immediate intervention in cases of cardiac arrest was particularly stressed. Subsequently, the session addressed the management of burns and wounds. The resource person explained the classification of burns and the corresponding first aid measures, cautioning against the use of harmful traditional practices. She highlighted the necessity of cooling the affected area with water, providing clean coverings, and seeking medical attention without delay. In addition, she offered comprehensive guidance on handling common emergencies such as cuts, bleeding, fractures, choking, and fainting, encouraging participants to remain composed and act decisively in such situations. The session was highly interactive, with students actively participating in discussions and demonstrations. Practical exposure to real-life scenarios ensured that the participants developed both confidence and competence in applying first aid measures. The workshop also reiterated the importance of maintaining a well-equipped first aid kit in homes, institutions, and public spaces. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Shajitha A, Coordinator Udhyami, who conveyed appreciation to the resource person for her valuable contribution and to the organizers for their efforts in conducting the workshop successfully. The “Courage to Care” workshop proved to be an informative and enriching experience, imparting essential life skills and reinforcing the values of empathy, responsibility, and readiness to serve society in times of need.
